SISTER ACT DRAW STRENGTH FROM CHALLENGE

- NICK WRIGHT

WHILE some sisters may squabble and bicker as tensions run high, Vanessa Green and Danielle King have found a way to capitalise on any adversity in front of them.

The talented duo, seeking to impress themselves upon the forthcoming national circuit, were triumphant in Townsville at the Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour.

They defied scorching temperatures in the middle of the day and a challenging sea breeze to emerge on top, claiming their first competition win of the year.

And according to the pair that is exactly the environment in which they typically thrive.

“Battling the conditions actually makes us play and be nicer to each other,” Green said.

“With the heat and the wind it was just full on us versus the conditions.

“I guess we get more focused on passing well and doing the little things right – keeping it simple and celebrating the points.”

King added: “I think when there’s just perfect conditions we expect 100 per cent – perfect shots, perfect sets and if it’s not we’re just a little (harsher).

“We are looking forward to the national tour coming back this year so we’re going to play a bit of that. It’s going to be a tough competition, so we’re working hard now to get some more wins and points.”

Green and King’s straight sets victory in the final at The Strand ended a run of close defeats in 2021.

According to King, the pair have “liked second”, making a host of finals but unable to finish the job.

But with the national tour on the horizon, they appear to be timing their run to perfection.

While they began their journeys as indoor volleyball players, a mounting injury toll convinced them to make the switch to the beach format, and they have not looked back since.

“With just two of us to worry about and travel it’s such a nice atmosphere. We both like to four-wheel drive and go camping,” Green said.

“We travel around, cruise around, party and play hard – it’s so much fun. Now we can just go up and up, we’re our own limiters now.”

King agreed: “We’ve been playing for nine years I think, so we’re pretty used to each other.

“We’ve got the sister (bond), sometimes we don’t have to talk to know what’s going on.”
