Perfect time to make it ‘big‘

Build career via Hastings Deering apprenticeship intake

- TONY RAGGATT

HASTINGS Deering will open applications for its 2023 apprenticeship intake on May 3, calling on people to “start something big”.

The mining and construction support company needs to fill more than 40 positions in an annual intake, which is hugely competitive but ultimately very rewarding for those accepted.

Six trades are on offer across 10 Hastings Deering workshops including Brisbane, Toowoomba, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa, Darwin and Alice Springs.

Hastings Deering’s general manager-people and culture, Peter Rigbye, said the positions continued to be highly sought after with record numbers year after year.

“The equipment we stand for powers the world. Big companies, big economies and big goals that come with big challenges and responsibilities,” Mr Rigbye said.

Townsville’s Cade Gravagna, 19, from Railway Estate, was part of Hastings Deering’s 2021 cohort, joining the company straight from school.

Mr Gravagna credits work experience for helping his application stand out, along with undertaking as many trade courses as his school allowed.

“I have always been a hands-on person and knew I wanted a career in a trade,” Mr Gravagna said.

“I love big machinery and the diversity of machines we get through the Townsville workshop. You might be working on a mining machine one week, a piece of road building machinery the next or a marine engine the week after.”

Mr Rigbye said that applicants should not be deterred

by the intensity of the competition. The company is committed to employing across diverse groups including mature age, female and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Would-be apprentices can see how they would look decked out in hi-vis work gear through Hastings Deering’s filter available on the Snapchat App.

“For students who are still

at school with an eye on a career in the resources sector, our advice is to take advantage of opportunities through the Queensland Resources Council and their Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy program and school-based training opportunities,” Mr Rigbye said.

“Applicants should also be sure to share what life experiences they have and if they are a school leaver include

their extra-curricular activities, whether that is sports or helping out a local charity. All of these things talk to us about your skills.”

Applications close midnight May 29. To learn more about apprenticeship opportunities, access the FAQS and top tips on applying by visiting the following link: https:// www.hastingsdeering.com.au /our-business/working-withus/apprenticeships
