Floodwater receding as weather improves
The Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) moved to stand down at an extraordinary meeting held on Thursday afternoon in response to major flooding in Giru earlier this week.
It was agreed the group would move to stand down once Giru streets were clear of floodwater and water isolating the township of Jerona began to subside.
The flood peaked at 2.83 metres in Giru from 7:30-9pm on Tuesday night, where water covered roads and surrounded several homes.

Lyn Mclaughlin, thanked all residents, emergency services and staff for their work in preparing for and responding to the event.
“I want to congratulate all residents and business owners in Giru for their vigilance in the face of any weather events – this flood was unlike any they have recalled previously, however they were all prepared and are now left with minimal property damage,”
Ms Mclaughlin said. “While floodwater did impede the township of Giru Tuesday afternoon and overnight, it is promising that it did not enter any habitable rooms, the Bruce Highway remained open between Townsville and the Burdekin, and Giru access from the Bruce Highway was maintained.
“All emergency services were mobilised ready to respond and I want to thank them all for their swift preparations.
“Council officers have been on the ground talking to locals over the past two days compiling data to be better prepared for future flood events, as well as council crews assisting with clean-up efforts.
“The Giru Transfer Station will also be open this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3-6pm for disposal of any debris – most sorted domestic waste is free to dispose of but I want to remind residents to ensure they cover and secure their loads.”
