Sugar Bowl festivities sure to bring some fun, top tennis

-

THE 2022 Annual Sugar Bowl will be held this weekend at the Home Hill and Ayr tennis courts, where 41 teams will compete to take out the top prize.

Hannah Casswell’s A Grade Teacups and Bruce Butler’s A Grade Tea Bags from Burdekin and Townsville will be looking to defend their titles in 2022.

After a close victory in B Grade in 2021 Joel Hanson’s team has moved up to A2 and will no doubt have to give it their best to be competitive.

Other teams to look out for are Troy Debondi’s team from Mackay, Vicki Black from Calen and the Sugar Bowl stalwart from Ingham, Christine George.

One of the most soughtafter trophies is the Team Spirit Award, which was won in 2021 by the Teaspoons, which boasted five members of the Woods family.

Kate Casswell, one of the Sugar Bowl organisers, wished the other 40 teams good luck in trying to wrestle this off the Teaspoons after the impressive performance in 2021.

Dallan Garvey, club president, said the teams really knew how to enjoy themselves, with some teams even having their own sportsmanship award like Scott Kittles’ Balls and All.

James Casswell’s Shoeys and Joel Hanson’s Deuce Bags are playing in different grades this year, so are playing off on Friday afternoon prior to the start of the Sugar Bowl for the Shoebags Cup.

With over 300 visitors expected over the long weekend, the club has been busy with the catering and getting their facilities in tip top class condition.

There will be the usual array of food plus a coffee stall at the entrance of Home Hill Tennis each day.

On Sunday evening, from 5pm onwards, there will be live music performed by Townsville’s Tammy Moxom, as well as a variety of food and entertainment.
