1861 EMMETT DALTON American outlaw
Dalton was part of a gang that attempted to rob two banks on October 5, 1892. He was the only member of the gang of five to survive, despite receiving 23 gunshot wounds. He served 14 years in prison before being pardoned.
1879 FERGUS MCMASTER
Australian businessman
Mcmaster was one of three founders of Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited, the airline that later became commonly known as Qantas. He served as chairman after the airline’s establishment in 1920.
1898 GOLDA MEIR Israeli Prime Minister
Meir served as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 until 1974. She was the first woman to become head of government in Israel. Meir was prime minister during the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
1903 BING CROSBY American singer
Crosby was the first true multimedia star, a leader in record sales, radio ratings and motion picture grosses from 1926 to 1977. Crosby made more than 70 feature films and recorded more than 1600 songs.
1921 SUGAR RAY ROBINSON American boxer
Robinson boxed professionally from 1940 until 1965. From 1943 to 1951, he went on a 91-fight unbeaten streak, the third longest in professional boxing history. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
1955 DAVID HOOKES Australian cricketer
Hookes’ Test career got off to a flying start when he hit Tony Greig for five consecutive boundaries in the Centenary Test in Melbourne in 1977. But he played just 23 Test matches for an average of 34.36. Hookes’ highest score was 143.
1956 GILLIAN ROLTON Australian equestrian
Rolton competed at two Olympic Games, in 1992 at Barcelona and 1996 at Atlanta, winning gold in team eventing both times on her horse Peppermint Grove. At Atlanta, she broke her collarbone and ribs but remounted and completed the course.
