PLAYS TO PACK A ‘PUNCH’

- EVAN MORGAN

PERFORMANCES will be short, sharp and showstopping when the curtain rises for the Festival of One-act

Plays at the Townsville Civic Theatre this weekend.

The festival is part of a long-term partnership between Townsville City Council and the Friends of the Theatre, which gives the region’s thespians, playwrights and directors the opportunity to take their works to the stage.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairwoman Ann-maree Greaney welcomed the event’s return.

“The Festival of One-act Plays is always highly anticipated, and with the impacts of floods and Covid during the past three years it’ll be great to see the festival finally go ahead with renewed vigour this week,” Ms Greaney said.

“This festival is a great opportunity for groups and individuals to take to the stage and be critiqued on their performances by an industry professional, giving them valuable feedback to help grow their talent.

“It’s not just the acting in the spotlight, with feedback being provided on the direction and writing too.”

Ms Greaney said that the event would also be plenty of fun for audiences.

“The beauty of one-act plays is that they have to be very creative with how they tell their stories –

that’s why each play is sure to pack a real punch,” she said. “I’d definitely encourage locals who are interested in theatre or who just want to enjoy a series of one-act plays to head

along to one of the festival’s sessions on Friday or Saturday.”

The Festival of One-act Plays runs from 6pm on Friday, and two sessions will be held on Saturday,

the first from 1pm and the second from 6pm.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for concession cardholders; and $12.50 for children and school students.
