Heidi here just in time

- DANIEL SHIRKIE

NURSE Jamie Hume has been helping families receive bundles of joy throughout her career as a theatre nurse at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville, but the most precious gift has been the culmination of her own journey to motherhood.

Jamie and husband Adam have been trying for a child for more than two years, and baby Heidi finally arrived – not without some drama – just a few days shy of Mother’s Day.

“It’s just surreal, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. We’re just happy that she’s finally here – and just in time for Mother’s Day,” Jamie said.

“She’s got perfect timing.”

While she hadn’t originally planned to, complications during Jamie’s labour necessitated a caesarean delivery. But neither Jamie or Adam were complaining.

“I finally know what it feels like to be a mum. The staff went above and beyond, they made us feel really special while they were taking care of us,” Jamie said.

Adam said the staff had been so good that it was hard to know anything had gone wrong at all.

“They were excellent, it didn’t seem tough at all at the time, it was just routine for them. I didn’t think we were in any drama at all,” he said.

While Jamie knew there would be a few dramas due to her training, she said she was feeling “spoiled” after having Heidi arrive in time for Mother’s Day.

“It’s a great way to spend that first Mother’s Day together,” she said.

“My dad flew up, he’s spending time with us for the week, so that he could see his granddaughter. My sister’s come up from Ingham and she’s helping us out around the place as well.”

While Jamie walks in the footsteps of her parents, both of whom were nurses, it’s her grandmother Sheila that she chose to pay tribute to – with Heidi taking her name as her middle name.

“We really wanted to honour her. I come from a family of nurses, both of my parents are nurses, I’ve been doing it for 11 years now, I just love it so much,” she said.

With the drama in the rearview mirror, the newly blessed parents are looking forward to relaxing at home.

“We might find the time on Sunday to do a nice breakfast or something, but we’re getting home on Saturday, so I think a lot of the day will be spent settling in and getting situated.’’
