Dad dies in bike crash

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

A YOUNG father has died after a horror crash at Garbutt on Friday morning, leaving behind small children and a loving wife.

About 6.20am, the 28year-old motorcycle rider was travelling inbound on Woolcock St when his bike collided with a stationary Great Wall ute at the intersection of Langton St.

The rider was thrown from his bike, with witnesses reportedly rushing to help him as he lay unconscious in the middle of the road.

It is understood the man was on his way to work when he clipped the ute tray.

Paramedics quickly arrived at the crash scene and took the man to Townsville University Hospital with serious head injuries.

Sadly, he could not be

saved and died in hospital. Police confirmed the man’s death in a statement on Friday morning.

“The 28-year-old Black River man was transported to hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries,” the statement said.

“A 60-year-old West End man, the driver and sole occupant of the utility, was not physically injured.

“Townsville police urge

anyone with information or dashcam footage in the area at the time to come forward.”

It’s understood the man had a young family, his youngest child just seven months old, and he was a truck driver.

The man’s family were devastated when speaking with the Townsville Bulletin, but did not wish to comment further for now.

Police blocked off a section of Woolcock St for most of Friday morning as they worked to investigate what happened.

The rider’s belongings, including his helmet, bag, clothes and shoes, were scattered across the road.

His motorcycle had skidded about 50m from where the collision happened, and laid on its side near the road.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.
