A month of festival fun

EVENT TO DRAW THOUSANDS

- LEIGHTON SMITH

THE popular North Australian Festival of Arts has revealed the headline acts to feature in this year’s edition, along with free concerts and the return of a festival favourite.

Jezzine Barracks will transform into the NAFA Festival Hub for the four weeks of action, with food vendors and the all-new Garden Bar making the hub the hottest place for after-work catch-ups or a night out.

Back with her brand-new show Club Kabarett, Townsville cabaret artist Bernie Dieter will be performing in one of more than 500 shows at NAFA 2022.

Locals will be able to get among the action at free concerts this year with Dragon taking the stage on July 1, Boy and Bear on July 3 and Dance Tropics Dance on July 9.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said NAFA was set to bring thousands of visitors to Townsville.

“NAFA is an award-winning festival that brings the best of Australia’s arts and culture scene to the heart of North Queensland,” Ms Hill said. “Having huge acts like Bernie Dieter in Townsville is a drawcard to entice travellers to Townsville from across the country.

“The economic boost that NAFA provides will not only be felt directly by artists taking part in NAFA but also by hotels, motels, restaurants, cafes, and tourism experience providers. The flow-on effect from NAFA is significant and is always well received by local business owners.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairwoman Ann-maree Greaney said the four-week event was unmissable.

“Because there are so many incredible acts and shows across the four weeks of NAFA, I would recommend taking a look at the NAFA website and booking tickets early to avoid disappointment,” she said.

NAFA is supported by the Queensland government through Tourism and Events Queensland and features on the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar.
