Benefits flow from vegan diet
EATING vegan for three months may lead to weight loss and better blood sugar control for people who are overweight or have type 2 diabetes, finds a Danish study being presented at the European Congress on Obesity.
The team delved into existing experiments to see how vegan diets stood up against various other diets.
Comparatively, vegan diets significantly reduced people’s weight and BMI but had only modest effects on blood sugar level and cholesterol.
However these results may be swayed by differing nutrient and energy intake across the diets.
“Vegan diets likely lead to weight loss because they are associated with a reduced calorie intake due to a lower content of fat and higher content of dietary fibre,” researchers said.
