Mums want a hug and KISS

WHETHER IT’S A LUNCH, BRUNCH OR PICNIC, KEEP IT SIMPLE

- LINDY LAWLER

For many of us, Mother’s Day can run from breakfast with your mother to lunch with your mother-inlaw and dinner with your children. Everyone gets to celebrate, but all that travel can be taxing, not to mention filling. By the time dinner arrives, you can be so full of food that all you want is to plop on the couch and relax.

For a more laid-back occasion, why not bring everyone together at home over a delicious meal, so you can celebrate with one meal? You could start early and have breakfast on the back deck or gather the family at noon for a big Mother’s Day lunch in the park. Or, you could spend the day swanning around then meet everyone for a garden tea party. Ask everyone to bring a plate, and the only thing you’ll need to agree on is where it will be.

BREAKFAST

If you’re meeting for brekky at home, the best things to make are simple but memorable. Whip up a batch of quick ricotta pancakes, a delicious Chinese omelette or a stack of mouth-watering French toast. Make sure there are fresh flowers plucked from the garden alongside.

LUNCH

A family lunch can be as elaborate or as simple as you prefer. If the family is gathering at one location, choose stress-free dishes such as a simple, slow cooked lamb roast or baked mustard chicken pieces that require minimal effort. Alternatively, make the most of the autumn sunshine and pack up a one-cup quiche to take on a picnic.

AFTERNOON TEA

Gathering for afternoon tea at a venue is a beautiful way to celebrate Mother’s Day, but it can also be expensive. expensive Why not t invite i it everyone over for a tea party in the garden instead?

Ask them to bring a plate, so the catering is taken care of, and you’ll soon have a delicious smorgasbord of food to choose from. Lemonade scones are a must for Mother’s Day, while mini cheesecakes or Neenish tarts will go down a treat among all ages. Don’t forget something savoury, such as chicken, pistachio and mayonnaise scones or cheese and bacon puffs.

Finger food brings an added benefit that everyone will appreciate – less mess to clean up afterwards.
