BROTHEL IN LIQUIDATION AMID ONLINE DATING BOOM
A COMPANY behind former Townsville brothel Seven Veils, which closed last month, has been placed in liquidation.
Sydney-based corporate restructuring specialist Cliff Sanderson was appointed liquidator to Grande Odalisque
Pty Ltd on May 3 under a creditors voluntary winding up move in which shareholders opt to put themselves into liquidation.
According to company documents, the brothel’s licensee Kay Lyons is the sole director and shareholder of Grande Odalisque.
The Seven Veils in Garbutt last month announced the closure on its website and on social media.
The Seven Veils opened in August 2020 after a period when the city’s two previous legal brothels had been closed for some years. Since opening, another brothel has opened, also in Garbutt. At the time of opening, Ms Lyons, a Townsville woman who is a former furniture maker, waitress and barmaid, said she had not previously operated a brothel and figured it had better returns than the banks were giving. Property agents say the emergence of online dating has hit the prostitution industry. It is also costly to get approvals with strict rules about how brothels operate, who can be licensed and who can be certified to manage them. Mr Sanderson could not be contacted for comment.
