Dam spills over as rain eases in region

THE Bureau of Meteorolog­y issued its final flood warning for the Ross, Bohle, Black and lower Herbert rivers on Thursday morning as levels eased.

A minor flood warning was still in place for the Haughton River catchment, but flooding at Giru was expected to fall below the minor flood level on Thursday morning.

The Haughton River at Giru was sitting at 2.03m and was falling slowly.

More than 100mm of rain fell in Townsville on Wednesday, which brought the weekly total to 126mm.

Since May 5, more than 300mm had fallen in the Cardwell Range, 279mm in Paluma, 205mm at Woolshed, 192mm at Mount Stuart, 196mm at Rollingsto­ne and 194mm at Yabulu.

On Wednesday, Ayr recorded 101.8mm of rain, and as of Thursday afternoon, Ayr had recorded 24.6mm.

The average rainfall in Ayr for the month of May between 1951 and 2022 is 39.9mm – far less than the 141mm recorded so far.

The bureau predicted most of the rain had moved offshore by Thursday, and just a shower or two was forecast for Townsville.

By Friday, the weather was expected to be partly cloudy, with just a 10 per cent chance of rain.

Burdekin Falls Dam was sitting at 120.1 per cent capacity as of Thursday lunchtime.

It was spilling excess water due to rainfall in the catchment.
