Council endorses strategy to strengthen disaster resilience
BURDEKIN Shire Council has endorsed a Burdekin and Charters Towers Multi-hazard Resilience Strategy, “a road map for achieving the Queensland government’s goal of making Queensland the most disaster resilient state in Australia’’.
At Tuesday’s ordinary council meeting, council moved the motion to support the strategy, however, there were still a few amendments that needed to be made to the final document.
The actions that would arise out of the strategic planning would allow for council to get further funding in case of natural disasters.
Burdekin Shire Council chief Terry Brennan said the council would have a number of strategies that would be able to focus on specific risks.
The objective of the strategy was to work in partnership across government to develop a prioritised plan of actions and program of delivery, matched to possible funding avenues that could be implemented over time by councils.
A number of objectives within the strategy included: identifying the region’s disaster resilience priorities, describing priorities using the voice of our regions, identifying actions and initiatives to address resilience needs.
Other objectives also included prioritising the identified actions and initiatives, connecting priorities to future funding and resourcing opportunities, documenting how risk-informed disaster resilience actions and projects meet local needs and align to state and national disaster risk reduction and resilience policy objectives.
