Relay For Life rally begins
Burdekin’s 2022 campaign launches with gusto as teams are encouraged to get in early to help smash fundraising goal
BURDEKIN’S 2022 Relay For Life campaign has been officially launched ahead of the Saturday, July 30 event at the Burdekin Rugby League Grounds.
The launch was held last week at the fountain on Ayr’s Edward St, and the pressure is on to exceed last year’s fundraising total of more than $20,000 for Cancer Council Queensland.
Relay For Life is an exciting annual event that involves a walking relay that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council to support cancer research, prevention, and patient support services.
The event also provides a chance for the Burdekin community to support those with cancer and people supporting a loved one with cancer, and a chance to recognise and celebrate cancer survivors, and honour and remember loved ones lost to the disease.
The face of Relay For Life in the Burdekin is Jacqui Kiloh, and the patron of Relay for Life is Shirley Gilmore.
While speaking to the Townsville Bulletin last year, Ms Gilmore said she had been involved with Relay For Life since it was first held in Townsville in 1999.
Ms Gilmore, who has previously had cancer herself, said it was important to raise awareness of the disease. .
She also runs a support network for women with cancer in the Burdekin.
“You have to go through it to know it – the changes that happen to your body and the changes that happen to your mind,” Ms Gilmore said.
“Cancer really has knocked on everyone’s door at some time.
“It’s lovely to see all the young people out there being passionate about it, because even most of them have been touched by cancer.”
Registrations are now open for the 2022 event.
A raffle will be organised by the committee that teams can sell tickets for, and teams are also encouraged to organise their own fundraising events for the cause.
