THE Australian Values Party leader Heston Russell is calling for $10m in federal funding for the first annual Veteran Games.
While the Senate candidate believes he could pull the event off without federal support, he wants the focus of the new event to be on supporting veterans and giving them an opportunity to come together to participate in military-style games.
“Bringing people together with purpose is our primary focus, because that is how we best support health and wellness at the community level,” Mr Russell said.
“The Veteran Games will provide the opportunity for veterans from all over Australia, regardless of their service or deployment history, to join together and put their skills to the test.”
Mr Russell has asked for nonpartisan support of the Gold Coast-based event and has approached the major parties for a commitment in funding.
A Labor spokeswoman said the party would be happy to engage with the Veteran Support Force and relevant levels of government on a Veteran Games in Queensland.
The LNP did not respond to a request for comment.
