Tree day to go ahead in Annandale

-

TOWNSVILLE City Council is forging ahead with the community Tree Planting Day, despite the rain putting a dampener on the start of the week.

The council’s Environmental Restoration Team will plant 250 native trees next to Annandale State School to help rehabilitate the area, with the help of the community.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairman Maurie Soars said the day was a fun way to become involved in conservation.

“This Sunday is a great opportunity to lend a helping hand, improve the area’s natural environment and learn about why native plant species are so important to Townsville,” Mr Soars said.

“We have a mixture of native species that will be monitored and maintained by council’s Environmental Restoration Team for three months until they become selfsufficient. These plants will provide shade, attract birds and butterflies, and all require low water levels to thrive.”

Participants will need a hat, gloves, closed-in footwear and water. The Community Tree Planting Day will run from 8.30am to 10am this Sunday at Annandale State School along Casuarina Drive.
