Prince William booed by crowd

- ZOE SMITH

Prince William has been booed by jeering football fans at Wembley Stadium ahead of the FA Cup Final.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association, was introduced to Chelsea and Liverpool players before kickoff. Liverpool fans gesticulated and made obscene hand gestures while Prince William sang God Save the Queen.

Rob Harris, global sports correspondent for AP, tweeted fans had disrupted a rendition of Abide with Me, jeered Prince William’s introduction and booed during the national anthem.

Members of the crowd jeered as Prince William’s name was announced in the stadium ahead of the traditional player handshakes.

Liverpool beat Chelsea after a nerve-racking penalty shootout.

The fans’ behaviour was slammed by British political leaders, who described their conduct as “shameful”.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said: “I utterly condemn any fans who booed Prince William at Wembley.

“The FA Cup final should be an occasion when we come together as a country. It should not be ruined by a minority of fans’ totally shameful behaviour.

“In this year of all years – the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – this is dreadful.”
