RIDE OF HONOUR

Motorbike convoy to mount up in Brendan’s name

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

IF Brendan Tyrrell could see the number of motorcycle riders preparing to gear up in his memory, he’d be smiling from ear to ear.

The beloved Black River dad’s family has organised a final ride to farewell him properly after Mr Tyrrell was killed in a crash on his way to work on May 6. The 28-year-old truck driver was riding his motorcycle along Woolcock St when his bike struck a stationary ute.

Sadly, Mr Tyrrell couldn’t be saved. Mr Tyrrell’s sister, Alicia Elliott, said it was important for her family to honour her brother in a special event, Brendan’s Last Ride.

Mr Tyrrell’s sister, Alicia Elliott said it was important for her family to honour her brother in a special event, Brendan’s Last Ride.

“We want to send Brendan off in a way he deserves, and secondly, we want to promote bike safety,” Ms Elliott said.

“If we can save one life by raising awareness, that would be the goal, because we don’t want another family to go through what we are.”

On Saturday, registered riders from all over the region will participate in a motorcycle convoy from Mount Louisa, past the accident site, along The Strand, and on to Mr Tyrrell’s resting place at Townsville Cremations.

The event, spurred on by Mr Tyrrell’s dad Rob Smith, fittingly falls during Road Safety Week. Ms Elliott said they had already had a lot of interest in the event and everyone was welcome.

“Last I checked over 100 people had registered their interest in one day (on the Facebook page).

“My mum wants it to be huge. If every single rider in Townsville came it would be amazing.”

Ms Elliott said her brother would be shocked at the amount of support. “I think he would be in absolute disbelief, he would not be able to comprehend all this was for him. I think he’d be smiling ear to ear.”

Mr Tyrrell had just applied to start university before his sudden death, and left behind three young children, Harper, Payton and Xavier, and wife, Aliesha.

The Forensic Crash Unit is still investigating the accident.
