Robson hopeful stint in Origin camp helps lift his game

- PHIL DILLON

REECE Robson says spending time in the New South Wales Origin camp can help him raise his game to the next level as the Cowboys seek to make finals football.

Robson has been a standout this campaign for Todd Payten’s side. His solid performances led to NSW coach Brad Fittler making a call to the 24-year-old on the eve of the series decider in Brisbane for him to join the Blues squad.

Robson, who has five tries in 17 appearances this season for the Cowboys, said he loved every minute of his time in camp and is hoping for more improvement on the back of it.

“It was unreal,” he said of his time with the NSW Origin squad.

“Obviously it wasn’t the right result for us New South Wales people, but it was a great game and a great week, and I took a lot out of it.

“Hopefully, I can try and implement a bit of what I learned into my game going forward, and that in turn helps the team.”

Robson said he was not the only Cowboy to benefit from a call-up to the Origin stage and it would be good for the team to have the likes of Val Holmes, Jeremiah Nanai, Murray Taulagi, and Tom Dearden back in the side to face the bottom-placed Wests Tigers in Townsville on Sunday afternoon.

“Val has been there (Origin) for so long and it was a good game for all our Queensland boys,” Robson said.

“Tommy Dearden, especially, will bring a lot of confidence back and that will benefit us going forward into the bigger games.”

Co-captain Jason Taumalolo said the Cowboys’ representative players had earned their spots on the back of a top campaign that sees Payten’s team in second place.

Taumalolo said the rep players would be welcomed back with open arms and all would bring some positivity following last week’s 26-12 loss to the Sharks.

“It’s great seeing guys like that being rewarded,” he said.

“It’s great to have them back and I’m sure they’re keen to rip into the last part of the season.”
