BROTHERS TO THE RESCUE

- PATRICK WOODS

KIRWAN State High’s year 10 rugby league team recently won the Cowboys Challenge, but almost missed out on the opportunity to play in a state final.

Needing to self-fund about $15,000 to fly the team to Brisbane and stay overnight, the school put out the call to offset the costs. Kirwan were halfway to their target within 48 hours thanks to Brothers Leagues Club, which donated $5000, and Dittmann Bullocking Bulls, who donated $2500. Deputy principal Dave Ackers said the timely nature of the donations was testament to the school’s community.

“After two phone calls we had half the money ready to go, which made the task for the boys a bit easier,” Ackers said. “They’re still fundraising with an online raffle and they also ran a car wash on the weekend.” Brothers Leagues Club CEO Justin Wilkins presented a cheque to the team yesterday.

“We heard that the boys had made the final and had the opportunity to show who has the best year 10 team in the state, and we wanted to make sure every boy had a chance to get there and play,” Wilkins said. “We’re Brothers Leagues Club, we’re about football, so you know if it means our town gets to represent the region, we want to make sure they do and no one’s left behind.”
