ANGIE ASIMUS

The weather presenter explains how her career could have been on the land instead of our TV screens …

- WITH JONATHON MORAN Angie Asimus is a Sydneybased newsreader and weather presenter on the Seven Network.

What three things would be at the top of your bucket list?

Here’s three in one: I’d love to find an inspiring property, either in the Australian countryside or Italy; write a novel and run yoga retreats there.

What was your first casual job?

My first job was at Mcdonald’s. I remember earning $5 an hour and staying long enough to save $10,000 to buy an around-the-world ticket, which was my first trip overseas.

Tell us something the public genuinely would not know about you.

I speak Italian. I fell in love with the language in high school and have kept it up as much as I can. Every trip overseas for me has to involve a stopover to Italy to maintain the skills! I must admit, I’m a bit rusty postCovid. Time to plan the next trip.

If you weren’t a journalist, what would you be doing now for a career?

I’d actually be a farmer! Having grown up on the land (in Gundagai), it’ll always be in my blood. If things had turned out differently, I think I could have been pretty happy growing food and fibre for a living.

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, tell us why or any experience you’ve had.

I grew up in a homestead built in 1853, so if you’d ever expect to run into a ghost it’d be there. We never saw a thing. But in the first home my husband and I bought in Brisbane in 2012, several people on separate occasions heard a woman’s voice say “Help me” in one of the spare bedrooms. I didn’t believe them until I sat on the bed myself one morning and actually heard it. We knocked on the neighbour’s door to check on her and everything seemed fine. It’s still a mystery.

If you had a superpower, what would it be and why?

To transform into inanimate objects and watch and listen to the world go by. It’d also be very handy as a journalist!

What makes you anxious?

People who don’t open their emails, text messages and voicemails and just have that little box in red illuminated with thousands of unread items. I know this is a lot of people, but I just don’t understand it.

Do you have any irrational fears?

So many! Especially working in the news and seeing the absolute worst-case scenario happen all the time.

If you could transport yourself anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? Anywhere hot and dry! I’m not picky.
