Burdekin Shire Council apprentice a TAFE finalist
BURDEKIN Shire Council apprentice Darcy Horan was a finalist in the 2022 TAFE Queensland Trade Excellence Awards.
Mr Horan is a 21-year-old Burdekin local who completed his primary schooling at East Ayr State School before moving on to Ayr State High School where he graduated in 2018.
Mr Horan secured his apprenticeship with the council in 2019. At the end of this year Mr Horan will be a fully qualified diesel fitter and will receive his Certificate III in
Engineering Tradesperson – Mechanical.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn Mclaughlin congratulated Mr Horan on being a finalist in the Automotive and Diesel Fitting Apprentice of the Year.
“Council is proud of young Darcy, who has committed himself to learn the trade of diesel fitting under the guidance of tradesmen at Burdekin Shire Council’s workshop. I understand his supervisors speak highly of Darcy’s workmanship and his ethics,” Cr Mclaughlin said.
Mr Horan said he has enjoyed his time working with the council as there was such a range of machinery and equipment to work on and finds it rewarding to have machinery broken down on arrival and be able send it back out working like new.
“Next year I’m planning to begin an auto electrical apprenticeship while also continuing diesel fitting, ideally on mine sites to gain further experience in the field,” Mr Horan said.
Cr Mclaughlin said the council offers several traineeships and the diesel fitting apprenticeship each year to Burdekin residents and encourages school leavers to consider applying for one of the positions.
