Burdekin Growers celebrate Race Day
The 25th anniversary of the annual Burdekin Growers Race Day was blessed by an abundance of sunshine, punters, fashionistas and fashion-fellas at Home Hill on Saturday.
“It was a fantastic day, the weather was great, the racing was good and the fashions were amazing, so overall it was just a fantastic day all around,” Burdekin Race Club secretarytreasurer Leanne Gudge said on Sunday.
“We had it all, you get the punters, you get the fashionistas and then you get the crew that go for socialising,” she said of the adults-only race event.
The Burdekin Growers Race Day has claimed a number of national and regional awards, including being named the district’s premiere event in 2022.
Ms Gudge was confident the 2023 edition had topped 2022, which attracted about 2700 people. “I think this year’s event was even better, it was 25 years and everybody supported it.”
She said the success of events such as the race day were dependent on the support of the local community, including volunteers and sponsors.
“I think we probably did a little bit better than last year in terms of the support we have received, so yes, it’s been pretty amazing.”
A tired Ms Gudge joked that after the clean-up she would give herself a few days off before launching into preparations for next year’s event.
“I’ll have a week off, then I’ll start thinking about ideas for what we are going to do next year and at the end of the day we will try and get as many clubs, sporting clubs and schools and whatnot involved,” she said.
“We try and make it a community event that can involve as many people as possible.”
