“I’ve wanted to go there for years, but that was my first trip to Fiji,” recalls Harry Bryant, a funloving, bowl-cut-sporting goofy from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. “I was just hanging around when this swell popped up on the charts so I pulled the trigger. It seemed like all the Pros were busy with the Aussie leg, so I was also hoping it would be uncrowded. When we arrived, there was hardly anyone there and it pumped all week. I’ve officially fallen in love with Fiji. She left such a good taste in my mouth.” Another who had spotted the impending tube-fest was Aussie photog, Rod Owen, who managed to get himself onto the Island in time to document this session. Rod is no stranger to Fiji and has been on hand for some of the biggest and best swells over the last decade, but even he was finding it difficult to remember a day that rivalled this one for pure perfection. “It was the first real swell of the Fiji season,” recalls Rod. “But it was one of the best and cleanest swells I’ve seen in years! Six-to-ten feet with not a breath of wind and a perfect swell direction.” When quizzed about this image, Rod admits that Harry had the magic touch on this day. “It seemed like after every wave he caught, he would get back into the lineup and another crazy one would go straight to him.”
