Kelly Slater, Quiksilver – 2008

Tracks - - Fix -

The contemporary Kelly Slater is intent on carving a future, which sees him directly in control of the brands he represents. In 2015 he officially launched his own fashion label Outerknown and also acquired a controlling share in Firewire surfboards. At the end of 2015 Kelly gave Adriano De Souza less than 24 hrs to enjoy his world title limelight before releasing the eye-popping clip of the KS wave pool. A little over a year later he sold a major stake in his tube pond to the WSL. Despite all these entrepreneurial forays, Kelly’s legacy will always be intertwined with Quiksilver – a brand he enjoyed a relationship with for almost a quarter of a century. According to Salts and Suits by Phil Jarratt, 18-year-old Kelly signed a deal with Quiksilver in 1990 for $320 000 – a figure which no doubt appreciated significantly over time. The adjacent image ran on the outside back cover of the December 2008 issue of Tracks after Kelly won his ninth world title. In 2014, sighting his desire to start a brand “that combines my love of clean living, responsibility and style” Kelly severed ties with Quiksilver, a company he once referred to as “kind of a family.”
