UAE case dis­missed

AU­THOR­I­TIES in the United Arab Emi­rates (UAE) have dis­missed a case against a UK res­i­dent who was re­port­edly ar­rested af­ter con­sum­ing a glass of com­pli­men­tary wine pro­vided on an Emi­rates flight.

Bri­tish me­dia re­port that Swedish den­tist El­lie Hol­man was de­tained on 13 Jul but re­leased on the week­end af­ter au­thor­i­ties de­cided not to pur­sue the mat­ter.

The le­gal group De­tained in Dubai high­lighted the case say­ing it ex­posed con­fu­sion around al­co­hol laws in the UAE.

Emi­rates has de­clined to com­ment on the case, but re­ferred to a state­ment by Dubai At­tor­ney Gen­eral Esam Issa Al Hu­maidan, who did not re­fer to al­co­hol but said Hol­man had at­tempted to en­ter the coun­try on an ex­pired Swedish pass­port.

He said Hol­man had ver­bally in­sulted an im­mi­gra­tion of­fi­cer and taken pho­to­graphs.
