COASTAL ar­eas of New Cale­do­nia were evac­u­ated yes­ter­day after a tsunami warn­ing prompted by a 7.5-mag­ni­tude earth­quake south-east of the Pa­cific ter­ri­tory.

The Pa­cific Tsunami Warn­ing Cen­tre is­sued an alert say­ing dan­ger­ous waves were pos­si­ble for sev­eral hours after the quake, both in New Cale­do­nia and is­lands of neigh­bour­ing Van­u­atu.

Smar­trav­eller up­dated its travel ad­vice for New Cale­do­nia to in­clude the warn­ing, how­ever the tsunami alert was can­celled sev­eral hours later.
