Dom spend up 15%

AUS­TRALIAN tourists spent a record $77.5b on do­mes­tic trips in 2018/19, up 15% on the prior cor­re­spond­ing pe­riod, the lat­est Na­tional Vis­i­tor Sur­vey re­veals.

For the year to the end of Jun 2019, Aussies aged 30-54 were the big­gest spenders, splash­ing out an av­er­age of $809pp per trip, com­pared with $666 by older trav­ellers and $471 by younger guests, who saved cash by “stay­ing with friends and rel­a­tives” when trav­el­ling do­mes­ti­cally, Tourism Re­search Aus­tralia re­ported.

Aus­tralian do­mes­tic tourists made 113.3 mil­lion overnight trips (up 12%) spend­ing a to­tal of 400.2 mil­lion nights away from home, the sur­vey found.

Out­bound travel was also up, with 9.9 mil­lion trips taken for the year end­ing Mar 2019.

Ja­pan was the fastest grow­ing des­ti­na­tion for Aus­tralians, with vis­i­tor num­bers more than dou­bling in the last five years.
