NSW gallery space

THE Art Gallery of NSW will transform one of two WW2 subterranean oil tanks located between Mrs Macquaries Road and Lincoln Crescent in Woolloomooloo, into a 2,200m2 underground contemporary art and performance space.

The “strangely beautiful” tank features seven-metre high ceilings and 125 columns, and delivers “unusual acoustics”.

The transformation is part of the $344m Sydney Modern project, which was originally slated for completion in 2021 but has been pushed back to 2022 due to a slow tendering process.
