THE Gross Do­mes­tic Prod­uct (GDP) for the Aus­tralian tourism sec­tor grew at a faster rate than the rest of the Aus­tralian econ­omy in 2018/19, ac­cord­ing to a new re­port com­piled by Tourism Aus­tralia Re­search.

The Aus­tralian Tourism Satel­lite Ac­count found the tourism in­dus­try con­trib­uted $60.8 bil­lion to the na­tional econ­omy, ac­count­ing for 3.1% of the coun­try’s to­tal GDP.

Do­mes­tic tourism con­tin­ued to be the largest driver, comprising 71% of the to­tal GDP value dur­ing the 2018/19 pe­riod.

The same data also showed that tourism con­sump­tion in Aus­tralia in­creased by 6.2% to $152 bil­lion, with the bulk com­ing from the trans­port sec­tor ($44.7 bil­lion), fol­lowed by ac­com­mo­da­tion and food ($42.4 bil­lion), shop­ping and gifts ($18.8 bil­lion), and travel agency and in­for­ma­tion cen­tres ac­count­ing for $9.4 bil­lion.
