It was originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC and served as a monument to the ruling family of the time.

In 1968 the site was under threat from the creation of a large artificial water reservoir after a dam was built, and to protect it, the complex was relocated on an artificial hill made from a domed structure.
