Tak­ing part in off-road races is a great way to keep the fun in your train­ing over win­ter – just ac­cept that you’re go­ing to get dirty and en­joy glo­ri­ous au­tumn days on the trails. If you’re plan­ning to do a lot, you might want to work on your bal­ance at home, too, so you’re bet­ter able to stay on your feet on un­sta­ble ground. One sim­ple way to do this is to do sin­gle-leg squats while stand­ing on a BOSU (half a Swiss ball with a plat­form on one side) or, if you don’t have one of those, just use a thick pil­low. Take the move­ment very slowly to make sure you’re re­ally us­ing the right mus­cles to con­trol the mo­tion. Gen­eral core strength will also help: we’re talk­ing planks, clams and back raises.
