Trail and error
Taking part in off-road races is a great way to keep the fun in your training over winter – just accept that you’re going to get dirty and enjoy glorious autumn days on the trails. If you’re planning to do a lot, you might want to work on your balance at home, too, so you’re better able to stay on your feet on unstable ground. One simple way to do this is to do single-leg squats while standing on a BOSU (half a Swiss ball with a platform on one side) or, if you don’t have one of those, just use a thick pillow. Take the movement very slowly to make sure you’re really using the right muscles to control the motion. General core strength will also help: we’re talking planks, clams and back raises.
