I used to swim in a club as a teenager and reached a plateau. I did a bit of rowing at university but when I went on to do a PhD at St Andrews it wasn’t very conducive to rowing. Somebody suggested going to the tri club.
I got into it from there. I’ve always been OK at most things, but never brilliant at one thing, so I just blithely thought maybe multisport is quite good for me. I did my first triathlon at East Fife on a hybrid bike with a pannier on the back. I got more and more into it and started working with the guy who’s coaching me now, John Lunn.
