bike count missed the lone Boardman AiR frame at the 2012 Hawaii Ironman despite the fact it was the machine of winner Pete Jacobs. That prompted a 1,000% surge in Boardman numbers for 2013, taking them ahead of Isaac (4) and Neil Pryde (2) with no Raleigh in sight in the racking. This compares to the 488 Cervelos, 220 Treks, 209 Specializeds, 115 Felts and 91 Scotts that made up the top five of the count.

This test proves there are a lot of good reasons to think outside the box when getting tooled up for your big race. But is it worth looking at alternative brands rather than just following the herd? We hit the Indian Summer lava fields of Yorkshire to find out.
