WHAT: NEW PLYMOUTH ITU TRIATHLON WORLD CUP WHEN: 3 APRIL WHERE: NEW PLYMOUTH, NEW ZEALAND

A DELIGHTED Richard Murray not only defended his world cup title from last year, he also celebrated his sixth podium in a row since the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Qualification Event last August.

The South African racer topped the podium flanked by Andreas Schilling (DEN) and Rostyslav Pevtsov (AZE) who took silver and bronze respectively.

Meanwhile in the women’s race, Gwen Jorgensen continued her world domination with yet another impressive performance.

The World Series champion of the last two years dismounted her bike in a surprising 13th position but soon strode to the front of the pack in her own inimitable style.

New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt on her first return to racing since the tragic death of her fiancé and coach Laurent Vidal in November, pushed Jorgensen all the way to the finish line. “We had a good battle out there, especially on the first lap of the run,” she said afterwards.

Just seven seconds behind was the USA’s Kirsten Kasper celebrating her third World Cup podium this season.
