Give a few dollars to help koalas
CURRUMBIN Wildlife Hospital Foundation is calling on the community to spare a few dollars to help injured koalas this winter.
Michael Pyne, senior vet at the hospital, said koala admissions had increased exponentially in the past 10 years.
“In 2008 we admitted 28 koalas and in 2017 we admitted 461,” Dr Pyne said.
“A big part of that is the disease that’s affecting a lot of our koala population. Sadly, chlamydia is a huge, huge problem and 80 per cent of koalas who are admitted into our hospital have chlamydia.”
Dr Pyne said the hospital was working closely with local universities in developing and rolling out a vaccine for chlamydia.
Donations to the hospital foundation of $2 or more are tax deductible. Visit www.currumbinwildlife hospital.org.au to donate.
