Distorting the truth
SUDDENLY we now have persons distorting the facts regarding the Tweed Hospital.
This decade’s Heal our Hospital campaign led by the Tweed Daily News was for the redevelopment of the Tweed Hospital and upgrade of clinical services.
The then chair of the Medical Staff Council stated re the master plan, “planning was a well-rounded, scientific, clinician-led exercise” (19/12/14).
Formal records state the Local Health District, “is awaiting formal confirmation on the commitment to fully fund the redevelopment of the Tweed Hospital to the full scope of the Clinical Services Plan” (29/3/17).
A Tweed Hospital Tender document (July last year) for the LHD states, “the hospital is a modern contemporary referral hospital”.
This document also reveals there are more than 700,000 staff, visitors and patients visiting each year.
Removing this visitation out of the Tweed Heads economy is not even on the government’s radar, nor the Chamber of Commerce.
The response to a formal request for information relevant to the criteria plan for relocation of the Tweed Hospital and Clinical Services Plan stated that the relevant area of Health did not hold the information despite the plan’s existence being formally documented in their own records.
Contrary to statements that the relocation of Tweed Hospital has been consulted with council for seven years, the elected body, as with the community, first knew of this the same day the Minister made his announcement in April (but refused to disclose until now that the Tweed Hospital would close). On review of the EIS so far, elements are seriously misleading and there are significant omissions.
The more that is being unravelled on the hospital issue, the more disturbing it becomes and the gravity of concern cannot be overstated. — Lindy Smith, Tweed Heads
