■ CASURARINA Beach was closed on Thursday after after a shark was spotted by the Department of Primary Industries. But authorities were forced to cancel helicopter patrols due to bad weather conditions.

According to the DPI’S Shark Smart Twitter account, Surf Life Saving NSW lifeguards sighted a shark at Casuarina and closed the beach about 9am. It came after the DPI said it was suspending helicopter surveillance of all beaches between Ballina and Tweed Heads due to “turbid water and storm cells.” The sighting was just one of several across the North Coast in the past week, with sharks spotted at Ballina and Byron Bay.
