BRAND NEW PORSCHE 993 TURBO SELLS FOR AU$4.3M
UNTIL THIS YEAR, the last time a Porsche 993 Turbo rolled out of the factory was back in 1998.
It’s no secret that air-cooled Porsches are one of the highest yielding investments these days (and that’s not even limited to cars), and the 993 – being the last of the breed –is one of the biggest cash-cows in the paddock.
Porsche, in celebration of its 70th anniversary (and maybe also a way of cutting their own slice of the classic car cash cake), built a brand new car in order to showcase the factory restoration capabilities of Porsche Classic, as well as their bespoke customisation and personalisation abilities from the Porsche Exclusiv Manufaktur department.
Titled ‘Project Gold’, they began with a newold-stock body shell, which was then built up by the factory over the course of a year and a half. After 427,000 man hours, the newly-finished 2018-stamped car from 1998 went under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s 70 Years of Porsche sale, and sold for a whopping Au$4.3 million dollars. The proceeds will go towards the Ferry Porsche Foundation.
When new, the 993 Turbo was the first
911 turbo with 4WD – lifted from the otherworldly 959 supercar. It was also one of the first production cars fitted with the OBDII diagnostics system.
993 Turbos are amongst the most desired models in the 993 range, with standard secondhand examples fetching upwards of Au$300,000.
The car was given a new VIN, and a 2018 build date; though due to being built to exacting late-90s specifications, modern day crash and emissions regulations render this car unable to be registered for the road.
The price tag for a technically fairly standard late-90s car is near impossible to make sense of, but with the unprecedented explosion in popularity and desirability, this one-off brand new Porsche was always going to be tricky to value.
We’re sure the new owner must be happy with their purchase, but if we were playing in that space – we’d like to say we would rather have stretched the budget a little bit, and taken home the Paris-Dakar Porsche 959, which sold in the same auction for Au$7.6 million!
