Piston confused

-

Dave, I read wit h interest your stor y in issue 436 regarding weird combos of pistons. In t he early 60’s,

I had a 50’s Simca Vedette with the V8-60 engine. While driv ing up Browns Mountain (NSW) in extreme heat, t he top of one of t he pistons decided it had had enough and let go. The car was transported to Nimmitabel for repair.

There were not a lot of these cars on the road and spare parts were not plentif ul, and so af ter four days look ing for a piston, the mechanic improvised and used one Norton motorbike piston and rings. I drove t he car for a further 12 months with no problems. You have to love and admire the old bush mechanics.
