We’d like to feel that Ur­ban read­ers are a dis­cern­ing lot. Yes, in the past you’d have hap­pily ne­go­ti­ated city streets aboard a Car­rera or even, as in the case of your edi­tor, a moun­tain bike that weighed a ton and came free with the par­ents’ wash­ing ma­chine.

But as your love for two wheels grew, you delved a lit­tle deeper, dis­cov­er­ing a world at odds with the ho­mogeny of the Hal­fords’ shop win­dow. Sud­denly your ver­nac­u­lar brimmed with terms like ‘tig weld­ing’, ‘shot-blast­ing’ and ‘lac­quer’. Cycling grew be­yond the prac­ti­cal; in­stead, it pro­vided a plat­form for the aes­thete in all of us.
