The Cleo (below) is Brick Lane Bikes’ new single-speed ladies’ bike, combining the classic construction of a Mixte stepthrough frame with the simplicity of a single-speed. That stylist twin top-tube- design can be traced back as early as 1901, though it maintains a timeless appeal that’s heightened by that gently sloping geometry. Double-butted steel offers stiffness and durability, while full-length mudguards and a slimline chainguard should deflect autumn detritus. BLB’s also launched the women’s-specific Lola (left), an elegant eight-speed city bike that also employs that Mixte top tube and double-butted steel frame. It comes with polished mudguards as standard and, again, includes a sleek chainguard. In our experience, Shimano’s Altus gearing should also run reliably. www.brick
