Stay in a castle in France
The idea of staying in a castle is intriguing, and oh-so possible in Europe. In France, the Château de Codignat, a member of Relais & Chateaux, is just one example. The Chateau is located in the Auvergne region of France, known for its wine, cheese, Romanesque art and for its spectacular volcanoes. Starting life as a tower protecting the Lords of Ravel, the castle expanded in the early 14th century, evolving into a magnificent castle overlooking the village of Bort-l’Etang and surrounded by forest. There are 19 rooms and suites located in the castle, in the Chalet Myrtille in the parklands and cottages by the pool, and you will find all the elements you would expect of a castle – including a dungeon and turreted towers. As if that wasn’t alluring enough, the castle’s restaurant has one Michelin star, and the wine cellar features 500 different labels. Apart from strolling the nooks and crannies of this medieval wonder, book a tour on the railway to the top of the Puy de Dome for jaw-dropping views over the volcanoes. Château de Codignat is open from April to November. relaischateaux.com
