Katamama, Seminyak Bali, Indonesia

- By Anthony Gallagher

This prestigious property has only recently opened, gaining a quick reputation with its unique accommodation style and soft touch offerings. Located in Seminyak’s heart, with lively shopping and entertainment options close by, it’s also directly next door to the always fantastic Potato Head Beach Club, making it the most convenient location for all things ‘Seminyak’.

Katamama is boutique by nature, and has 58 beautifully-appointed suites that have just the right mix of Balinese heritage and modern-day chic. Upon checking in, we were greeted by the ‘Cultural Concierge’ offering us a unique service of local knowledge and anything we needed to know about the Balinese and how to get the most from our stay. We are in a Rooftop Suite, with all the offerings and spacious bathrooms and the finest of linens, as expected. The hotel has returned to a traditional Indonesian red-brick look with furnishings hand-crafted by local artisans and we adored the original pieces of art dotted around the walls. The best feature is undoubtedly the rooftop garden area, complete with Jacuzzi, outdoor shower and dining area, as well as fantastic views over the ocean. Katamama has a great pool with quiet, lush lawns and deck for reading or napping. For guests who are partial to cocktails, the Akademi Centre of Mixology, helmed by mixologist Dre Masso is a highlight if you want your personal barman to spice up your minibar, with fresh ingredients ready to be prepared in all suites.

The entire hotel space has its own unique charisma, while for foodies, MoVida serves up delicious Spanish small-plate options and is popular with local expats and guests alike. Katamama is a member of the Legend Collection from Preferred Hotels & Resorts. preferredhotels.com
