GLOBAL VILLAGE

-

In Cambodia, where more than half of all deaths are attributable to waterborne illnesses, Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) has created a partnership with local communities to help provide clean water. Since 2008, AKP has built more than 1200 wells in Siem Reap alone, delivering fresh, bacteria-free water to more than 20,000 people. A well with a bio-sand filter provides easy access to water that is also used to irrigate farm plots and water domestic livestock. On a recent visit to Preak Ko

Tmey village, a subsistence farmer informed the AKP team that she had three healthy pregnant pigs thanks to having access to clean water from the local well. In the past, due to high temperatures, it was a struggle to keep more than one pig alive, but now, with the ability to raise more pigs, the farmer is making an additional income. As a result, she says her daughters have the opportunity to move to a better school, where standards are higher and educational opportunities greater. akphilanthropy.org
