THE HERMITAGE TRAVELS DOWN UNDER

-

From 13 October 2018, the Art Gallery of New South Wales will play host to 65 of the world’s best modernist paintings. Travelling from the State Hermitage Museum of St Petersburg, the paintings provide an insight into the liberation of their European and Russian creators. Ranging from the late 19th century to the early

20th century, the paintings also speak to the State Hermitage Museum as an institution and the story of Russian collectors Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov who championed and publicised the innovative works of the French modern masters and from whose private collections many of the works have been sourced. Highlights from the Masters of Modern Art from the Hermitage exhibition will include Monet’s Poppy Field, Picasso’s Table in a Café and Mattisse’s Nymph and Satyr. There will also be significant works from Russian contemporaries Kandinsky and Malevich. The exhibition will run until 3 March 2019. artgallery.nsw.gov.au
