THE SALT SHAKERS OPEN THEIR DOORS

-

The LUX Collective group of resorts and hotels has launched a contemporary new brand of resorts called SALT, with the first property SALT of Palmar on the eastern coast of Mauritius now open. The ethos of the SALT brand is to give modern travellers meaningful and sustainable travel experiences in the heart of the communities in which they visit. The design, managed by French designer Camille Walala, has taken inspiration from local colours and motifs with the aim to bring the local culture indoors. Guests can read a bespoke guidebook written and photographed by locals with maps, a local SIM card and a choice of bicycles and convertibles to explore the local area. The SALT group have created a ‘Skill Swap’ platform whereby guests have the chance to exchange their knowledge and skills with members of the local community. The hotel sources as much as possible from local suppliers, including food, furniture, fabrics and toiletries — prioritising fair trade, organic and non-toxic items, and limiting their energy use, waste and emissions with no single-use plastics allowed. Further SALT properties are in development throughout the Indian Ocean, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Prices start from US$200 (about A$276) per double, per night. saltresorts.com
