LE MÉRIDIEN CHIANG RAI, THAILAND

- By Sue Wallace

Striking artwork, a three-tiered pool, river views and great dining are features of the Le Méridien Chiang Rai but it is two sprawling century-old rain trees that take centre stage. A Thai love story legend surrounds the magnificent shady trees that are set in an oasis of manicured lawns and tropical gardens on the Mae Kok River, just a short drive from the city that was once the former capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom of King Mengrai. The 159-room resort set over five wings features sweeping views of the pool, lake, and river. It is a haven after a busy day of sightseeing in Thailand’s most northern province, the home of lofty tea plantations.

The hotel serves one of the best breakfasts imaginable with an extensive buffet and food stations offering everything from fresh fruit, healthy juices and smoothies, as well as your favourite meats and salads, cheeses and eggs done every which way at the signature restaurant, Latest Recipe. There’s also a popular Friday night seafood dinner buffet and a relaxed Sunday brunch.

Riverside Italian restaurant, Favola, serves great Italian cuisine and Latitude 19 is the place to go for good coffee. The riverside spa offers a range of treatments and pampering after a busy day of exploring. A free shuttle bus takes guests downtown for shopping and markets. Schedule in an extra night here as many are disappointed their stay is too short at this impressive resort that is an Instagrammer’s paradise. Prices start from THB3556 (about A$148) per room, per night. lemeridienchiangrai.com
