BLANKET BAY, GLENORCHY, NEW ZEALAND
Sometimes a place is so beautiful that it takes your breath away. Blanket Bay is such a place. Located just out of postcard perfect Glenorchy on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, the lodge has knockout views over the snow-topped Humboldt Ranges opposite, often reflected in the lake’s still waters.
The main lodge is spectacular, with the Great Room with its soaring ceilings, enormous glass windows and comfortable lounges the perfect place to take in those views. There are several accommodation choices, with rooms and suites in the Main Lodge, the Owners Cottage, Villas and Chalet Suites. I am staying in the Mt Earnslaw Suite in the main lodge, with a lounge area with ample places to sit, a push button fire, beautiful bed and an outdoor area with seating, area for dining and views over the lake. The bathroom is enormous, with a shower that can turn into a steam room, heated floor and heated towel rail. In the evening I join other guests for drinks in the Den, then sit down to an exceptional dinner in the Dining Room. For something special, guests can choose to dine in the Wine Cave – perfect for an anniversary or birthday.
To top off a perfect stay, I visit the spa, luxuriating in the hot tub that has the most spectacular views, before losing myself in a blissful massage. I inspect the gym, and think that even I might be tempted to hop on the treadmill. Oh maybe not. Instead, I could go horseriding at Blanket Bay’s own stables, go on a helicopter flight with Heli Glenorchy to Milford Sound, stroll around the gorgeous hamlet, tackle a hike through spectacular surrounds or do one of the many Lord of the Rings-based tours, as Peter Jackson filmed numerous scenes for the trilogies around here.
Or, just stay at Blanket Bay, enjoying the beautifully manicured lakeside grounds, the hot tub, the Great Room or your own room. When it is as good as this, it is the ideal choice.
Prices start from NZ$1150
